The existence of the latest series of Nvidia GPU actually
has been known for quite long time, but CEO Jen-Hsun Huang officially revealed
it last week. Nvidia call it GeForce GTX 1000, for now it consists of GTX 1080
as the most high-end type and its little brother, GTX 1070. Nvidia claim that
GTX 1080 so far is the most advanced graphics card they have, focus on gaming
activities and sustain virtual reality.
The most interesting thing on the GTX 1080 lies in the
comparison of performance level and price. In the presentation, Nvidia showed
off the latest GPU capabilities for running Doom game via API Vulcan, acquire
200 frames rate per second. And the good news, GTX 1080 will not force you to
sacrifice too much money. This product is cheaper $ 400 than the GTX Titan X.
Compared to Titan X, GTX 1080 gets doubled performance with
three times higher efficiency rate. This is achieved thanks to the Pascal
architecture that consists of 16nm FinFET chip. The smaller chip design makes
the power consumption and heat dissipation become lower. It allows Nvidia to
increase the core GPU speed as the key to boost performance.
In addition to FinFET chip, GTX 1080 is also supported by
8GB GDDR5X memory. A new type of memory with high bandwidth makes sure the
bottleneck won't happen, especially when handling heavy visual games. For
cooling solution, Nvidia redesign the vapor chamber and fan - carrying polygon
form, and give backplate to help the heat dissipation. Not only could work more
silent, the design will also support overclock effectively.
Pascal Artistektur is equipped with supporting gaming
technologies, such as DSR, G-Sync and Nvidia Hairworks. However GeForce GTX
1000 series also introduces new features such as Ansel (to take screenshots
using timestop and freecam control), Simultaneous Multi-Projection, VRWorks
Audio, VR PhysX, and VR Touch.
GeForce GTX 1080 will be released on 27th May at price
ranges of US $ 600. While the GTX 1070 will follow later on June 10, it's sold
for US $ 350.
