Microsoft Showcases Virtual Teleportation System Called Holoportation

Microsoft Showcases Holoportation

The term of teleportation as we know comes from the science fiction movies, and so far the scientists still can't prove its validity. But along with the popularity of virtual reality technology and augmented reality, people begin to wonder about the virtual teleportation system.

The same imagination is also thought out by Microsoft Research team, and interestingly they are really trying to create a virtual teleportation system with the help of Microsoft Hololens and three-dimensional cameras, and this technology is called Holoportation.

Holoportation is basically able to record the physical form of a human, and then move it to another place in the form of a hologram. In other words, this technology is able to unite you to other person who's far away from you.

This system works in several steps. The first step is the 3D cameras will record and create a three-dimensional model of a person's physical form, complete with his/her movements. From there, the three-dimensional model will be projected right in front the Hololens users, so as if both of them were face to face in the same room.

The interaction with hologram can also be recorded so that the users can watch it again at any time. Because it is a recording, the users can manipulate it such as shrinking the size to be placed on the table, and then watch it from all directions.

Although it is not perfect yet, the demonstration video looks quite impressive. This also adds the potential use of Hololens, where Holoportation later can be an interesting alternative to video call technology that has been available now.
