Nikon has just introduced KeyMission 360, it means this
Tokyo-based company is officially playing in the segment that has been dominated
by GoPro. KeyMission 360 is an action camera, with a little twist. Nikon
intends to create a new family of action camera, where the number '360' in the
name marks the 360-degree video recording capabilities. Nikon also promises to
immerse the advanced imaging technology there.
KeyMission 360 has boxy shape, slightly larger than the
GoPro Hero Session 4, minus the cube appearance. Overall, it is still
relatively small. There are two sensors and two lenses in the front and rear to
produce a single still image or intact 4K video. The series of buttons, HDMI
port, memory card slot and battery are positioned on the side.
This action camera brings a tough structure and rugged
design. Nikon mentions some usage scenarios, for example, to accompany you
exercise, adventure, or just traveling. KeyMission 360 is equipped with the
waterproof capability to a depth of 30 meters, dustproof, shock resistant,
resilient when falling from a height of up to 2-meters, and freezing
temperatures.
To make excellent recording, Nikon also gives Vibration
Reduction feature. It can be activated through the application; it serves to
minimize the vibration effects and to maintain sharp video quality. Nikon tries
to present this action camera as an economical 360 degrees camera, user
friendly, and is intended to produce virtual reality contents.
Indeed previously there have been many 360 cameras with
affordable prices, for example Ricoh Theta, but the design of KeyMission 360
will facilitate this action camera to be attached to a helmet or vehicle, brings
it deeper into GoPro territorial. According to the plan, Nikon will launch
KeyMission 360 in Spring 2016.
