One of the main obstacles of Wifi router is the ability to
reach all corners of the room in the house, especially if the house is so vast.
So far, the most common solution is to install an additional router or Wi-Fi
extender. Unfortunately, the process is relatively complicated for the general
people and there is a series of compromises that must be accepted - a decrease
in speed, breaking the connection when moving from one zone to another zone.
Another solution is by using the mesh networking technology.
Simply put, this technology allows the router to communicate with other
routers, forming a single Wi-Fi network that can be accessed from all corners
of the house. This technology actually is not a new thing, and has been
implemented in airports, malls and major companies. But now AVG wants to bring
it into the house through Chime Router.
Chime Router is a Wifi router that utilizes mesh networking
technology to form a wide Wifi network with a number of routers at once. It's
expected that all parts of your house will be covered by stable Wifi signal. Chime
Router is equipped with a dual-band antenna, which means it can transmit Wi-Fi
signal in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Typically dual-band routers will create two
different networks for each frequency. Not so for Chime Router, everything goes
behind the scenes, and there is only one Wi-Fi network that's created for all
devices.
One unit of Chime Router is claimed can accommodate up to 50
connected devices. Each of Chime Router brings a pair of Ethernet ports and a
USB 2.0 port. The shape looks elegant and slick.
Interestingly Wifi network that's created by Chime Router
will be protected by AVG AntiVirus Free. There is also a VPN and Tor features
for users who want to access the Internet anonymously, aka doesn't leave traces
even in the eyes of internet service providers - but still can be monitored by
AVG itself.
Chime Router is also accompanied by a smartphone
application. Through this application, users can monitor while controlling what
is happening in the home network, including blocking certain 'dangerous' sites
- crucial when there are children in the home who have access to the devices.
Now the Chime Router can be ordered through Indiegogo
crowdfunding website for $ 125 per unit. Unfortunately AVG only ships it to European
Union, Canada, and US.
