Like most social networking services today, Twitter also has
Follow feature to connect users with the nearest person, family and friends.
Previously the users were allowed to follow 2,000 people, but now Twitter
raises the limit up to 5,000 people.
This change was announced through its official tweet on
Tuesday (10/27/2015) local time. Twitter also provided an explanation about
this new limit.
Starting today, we are increasing our current follow limit from 2,000 to 5,000 accounts for all users: https://t.co/Yxx66XESMf

It's explained that this limitation is a way to control the
excessive follow or unfollow activity in large numbers which's done by machine.
According to Twitter, the 5,000 number is considered more
than enough and won't become big problem for normal users. This limitation also
helps Twitter in maintaining server performance and cut unnecessary
notifications on the users' timelines.
Twitter also confirms that this limitation will apply
differently for each user depending on the ratio of the followers number and
the following number. When this limit is reached, the system will display an
error message and the users are required to get more followers to be able to
follow other users. Simply put, the number of following and followers must
remain balanced.
