Using smartphone as a navigation tool when driving is not
completely safe, including when cycling, we need a navigation device that's
really designed for the needs of cyclists.
Indeed this kind of device has been widely available on the
market, but unfortunately it's offered in high price and makes the navigation
features in the smartphone will be in vain just like that. Therefore, we need a
more attractive and affordable alternative.
Named Haiku Bike Assistant, this device consists of an OLED
display, LED indicator and a kind of infrared sensor that can detect the wave
of hand or finger. To be able to be used in all kinds of bike, it comes with a
magnetic holder that can be attached on the handlebars.
It's easily installed and removed, but strong enough to
remain attached on the handlebars even if you're passing on the bumpy road. Its
case is designed to be waterproof so you can still use it even during the
rains.
Unlike the regular navigation devices for bicycles, Haiku Bike Assistant wants to maximize the potential of your smartphone. Open the
Google Maps application on the smartphone and then the data will be forwarded
to Haiku via Bluetooth. Haiku will then guide the travel route by displaying
simple instructions that won't ruin your concentration.
When there is a notification comes into the smartphone,
Haiku will still display the navigation instructions, but at the same time its
LED indicator will light blue. To see it, you can wave your finger on the top
of sensor at the right side of the Haiku screen.
This operation system allows your hands to hold the
handlebar grips. In addition, because it doesn't rely on the touch panel at
all, Haiku can still be operated even if you're wearing gloves. Simple,
effective, and is able to adjust to the user's cycling style.
Another interesting thing is Haiku can also serve as digital
speedometer. By utilizing the GPS data that's collected by smartphone, Haiku
will show how fast you are moving. You can set the data metrics that will be
displayed through its companion application.
The developers of Haiku Bike Assistant say that they are
ready to enter the production phase. If you are interested, you can get this
product through Kickstarter with a pricel of € 70.
