In the midst of tight competition against Android Auto,
Apple CarPlay seems to act more aggressively through a highly anticipated
feature, the ability to operate wirelessly. Through WWDC 2015 stage, Apple has
announced that along with iOS 9 later, CarPlay will no longer need a cable to
connect your iPhone to the car dashboard.
Previously users must connect their iPhone to the USB port
of car's head unit if they want to access the CarPlay. Going forward, the
applications that are stored on the iPhone can be used directly through a
compatible car's head unit wirelessly.
At the same time, Apple also opens an opportunity for
automotive manufacturers to embed their applications into CarPlay. Thus, the
car owners no longer need to go out of CarPlay to access the companion app of
their smart cars.
Apple also explains that CarPlay will be implemented on the
car's head unit that's packing diverse screen sizes with different aspect
ratio, including the high-resolution screen. This step may be taken to increase
the interest of automotive manufacturers in adopting Apple's connected car
platform.
One thing to note, the CarPlay update also requires new
hardware. This means that the owners of the cars which have been compatible
with CarPlay need to replace the head unit.
