The first smartwatch of Asus, ZenWatch, got a lot of
attention from the customers because of its attractive form. Now, still retains
a similar design philosophy, the Taiwanese manufacturer launches their second
smartwatch, VivoWatch.
Asus VivoWatch carries a slightly different concept. If
ZenWatch that's powered by Android Wear was intended for the mainstream market,
the VivoWatch is targeting specific segment with a focus on health tracking.
From the outside, Asus VivoWatch's form is not much
different with the ZenWatch. The screen is coated with Gorilla Glass 3, and is
believed to be extremely power efficient, with a resolution of only 128 × 128.
The strap used is 22mm standard size, while the overall weight is about 50
grams.
Asus VivoWatch has received IP67 certification. It can be
brought to swim in a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. Below the screen, there
are LED lights that will light up green or red, indicating whether your
exercise is too strenuous or not.
There is no information about the OS that’s running in this
smartwatch, but certainly it's not the Android Wear. Asus VivoWatch is
compatible with Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth 4.0, and the
synchronization can be run automatically by downloading the Asus HiVivo
application.
Asus VivoWatch main function is to monitor user's heart rate
for 24 hours nonstop, armed with optical sensors and a technology called
VivoPulse. The number of footsteps and calories burned will be calculated, and
this smartwatch is also ready to learn your sleep patterns.
The UV sensor is implanted into this wearable device to
recognize the weather conditions outside. Then the interesting feature is the
Happiness Index, where VivoWatch will give 0-100 score based on how diligently
you practice and the quality of your sleep each day.
The social aspect is also given special attention. Through
the Asus HiVivo application or Asus Healthcare site, the users can monitor how
active their family and closest friends who also use the Asus VivoWatch.
Asus VivoWatch battery is claimed can last up to 10 days of
usage. This figure is better than the Apple Watch or Android Wear smartwatch,
and quite able to compete with the Pebble smartwatch.
Unfortunately there is no definite news about the marketing
schedule - possibly in May. The official price tag is still unconfirmed, but
for the UK market, Asus VivoWatch will be released for £120.
