Fitbit name is often associated
with wearable fitness tracker or devices that focus on health. But in the future,
Fitbit's devices could also be one of the electronic payment methods, such as
the Apple Watch that has been enriched with Apple Pay service integration.
This prediction is based on the
acquisition of a startup named Coin. Over the past four years, Coin has
developed a wearable device based payment platform, and now some of its
intellectual assets will be taken over by Fitbit.
This acquisition will accelerate
the Fitbit efforts in developing NFC-based electronic payment that can be
inserted into the Fitbit's devices in the future. Fitbit itself stressed that
this kind of feature will be presented at least in next year.
Fitbit doesn't want to hurry in
launching its electronic payment system. The main focus of this company is
still in activity tracking and other features related to health, but the
addition of electronic payment feature will obviously attract more consumers.
Will this NFC-based electronic
payment feature be presented along with the successor of Fitbit Blaze? Let's wait for the next surprise.
