Samsung is getting serious in developing virtual reality technologies.
This South Korean company has just announced its latest innovation which offers
a four-dimensional VR experience. Yes, the four-dimensional just like we used
to find in 4D Theaters at a number of entertainment venues.
This innovation comes from the
experimental division of Samsung C-Lab which previously had exhibited some
unique gadgets like smart belt WELT and VR rink controller. Named Entrim 4D,
the device is basically headphones that are specifically designed to accompany
the Gear VR headset.
Entrim 4D utilizes a mix
of special algorithms and Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) to transmit
electrical signals to the nerves in the ear. A number of electrodes that are
stored in the headphones will keep the movement data from the video, and then forward
it through the electrical signal. The end result is that the user will feel as if
his body moved following the movement in the video that's being shown.
Samsung even explains that
Entrim 4D can be connected with a drone where the movement data of the drone
will be forwarded to the headphones and user will feel as if he was flying and
watching the scenery around.
According to Samsung,
there are at least 30 different types of movement that can be felt by the user.
Samsung is also preparing another prototype with an extra electrode that can
give the impression of a rotational movement.
The combination of Entrim
4D and Gear VR is eventually going to give four-dimensional VR experience
without having to rely on special moving chairs as offered by the 4D Theater.
This innovation is also expected to be a solution for the nausea that commonly
felt by the user when wearing a VR headset.
So far Samsung Entrim 4D
is still in the development stage, but at least it can open the consumers' eyes
about the potential development of virtual reality technology in the future.
