After long enough producing the APS-C DSLR camera and medium
format, Pentax is now targeting a new realm, the full-frame DSLR. Yup, the
company that was acquired by Ricoh in 2011 now has an equal rival to Canon 5DS
or Nikon D810.
Named Pentax K-1, this is the debut of Pentax in the
full-frame DSLR segment. Therefore, it's not surprised if the image sensor is
the main focus here. Pentax K-1 packs full-frame CMOS sensor at resolution of
36.4 megapixels. Its sensitivity reaches ISO 204 800, and the absence of
anti-aliasing filter makes sure the picture is free of moiré effects.
Not only packs the advanced image sensor, K1 is also
equipped with 5-axis image stabilization system that's very effective to
prevent blur due to unstable grip. Even when performing panning technique, the
system will predict which direction the camera is moved by the user, and then
applying the optimum compensation.
However, the video recording option is limited in 1080p
30fps only, not 4K. Luckily it could be covered by a reliable autofocus system
that includes 33 points - 25 of which are cross-type points - as well as 4.4
fps burst shooting performance.
Besides relying on image quality, K-1 also has a number of
unique features such as a flexible 3.2-inch LCD, this screen can be tilted
horizontally, vertically or diagonally. If you are not accustomed in using the
LCD, you can take advantage of its viewfinder that has standpoint of nearly 100
percent.
Another feature is the Operation Assist Light that's
designed to allow user to operate the camera in dark conditions. A number of
LED lights are placed in several parts of the body such as the above lens and
memory card slot. The aim is that the user can remove the lens or replace the
memory card with ease when in low-light locations.
All the features are packed in a tough body that's
waterproof, dustproof and resistant to cold temperatures. The size is also
compact enough for a full-frame DSLR, with a weight of less than 1 kg,
including the battery.
Pentax K-1 can be purchased starting at next April for $
1800 (body only). Pentax will also offer 12 new full-frame lenses to accompany
its flagship DSLR.
