Have you ever imagined to type on a table without using a
keyboard at all? Well, with a device called Gest you can do it easily.
Gest is a wearable device that's wrapped around the palm of
the hand. It has four 'rings' that are connected via cables. The four rings are
used to monitor the position and movements of each finger by utilizing the
accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer.
Overall, Gest is powered by 15 kinds of sensors to recognize
a wide variety of gestures that are commonly used on a touch screen. While in
use, Gest is claimed will continuously study how user applies each gesture in
order to maintain its accuracy.
At first the developer team of Gest designed this product as
a support tool for editing in Photoshop. The idea is, you can raise and lower
the exposure slider, add a new layer, or zoom and reduce the brush size by
using gestures - as if you were turning a real knob. In this way, your dominant
hand can hold the stylus, if you use a tablet's pen.
Even so, Gest also has a potential in other area such as for
virtual reality (VR). As we know, the majority of VR headset still relies on
standard controller just like the console controller. With Gest, the user can
control the game without grasping anything.
Furthermore, when you are wearing two Gests on the left and
right hands, this device can also be used for typing. Gest certainly also
involves prediction software so the typing result won't be a mess because you
don't know what buttons you have pressed.
The developer team of Gest still has to develop the Software
Development Kit (SDK) so that the product can be compatible with a wide range
of applications - by default Gest can control Photoshop on a PC or Mac. About
the hardware itself, Gest relies on Bluetooth 4.0 so that it can be used with
Android, iOS, Windows PC or Mac.
Gest is currently being raising funds through Kickstarter
where the consumers who are interested can be a backer with the lowest pledge
at this time, $ 149.
