So far the performance of gaming notebooks still can't match
the desktop PCs. The reason is quite simple, because there is not enough space
in the notebooks to put all the components needed to boost the performance.
But at the IFA 2015, there was a gaming notebook that could
take attention of many visitors. It was the Asus ROG GX700, which's equipped
with an external liquid cooling system. The complete specification of the notebook
at that time was still disguised. But now there is a direct confirmation from
Nvidia which says that Asus ROG GX700 is one of the first laptops that will be packed
with GeForce GTX 980 desktop GPU - not the GTX 980M.
Somehow, Nvidia and Asus manage to put this big GPU into
gaming notebook's body without compromise at all - there is no reduction in the
number of CUDA cores. Compared to a regular notebook, the Asus ROG GX700 does
look bigger, but still nothing if compared to desktop PC casing.
Reportedly there will be six notebooks from Asus, Clevo,
Gigabyte (Aorus) and MSI that would bring the GTX 980 desktop GPU. The six will
also be equipped with G-Sync screen to overcome the tearing problem, and
overclocking option. Special for one notebook, MSI GT80, will come along with a
pair of GTX 980 GPUs in SLI configuration. With this notebook, the heaviest
game can be run in 4K resolution.
At the same time, the six notebooks apparently will become
the first notebooks that meet the standard hardware that has been specified by
Oculus Rift. In other words, the six notebooks are ready to run all the virtual
reality games that will be presented in the first half of next year.
So far there has been no information about the release
schedule and the price of the notebooks above. But another important note is
the notebooks that are equipped with GTX 980 desktop GPU need to be constantly
plugged into the mains. When using battery power, the performance will decrease
to be GTX 980M which is indeed designed for notebooks.
