There are many new things presented by Google in the annual
event of Google I/O 2015. The Android M may become the center of attention of
the media and guests who come in that event. But there is one interesting thing
to be highlighted: the presence of offline support for Google Maps.
In the presentation, Jen Fitzpatrick as Vice President of
Engineering highlights the high cost of internet in developing countries such
as India, Philippines and Vietnam. Not only expensive, but the Internet in
these countries is also very slow.
The presence of offline support in the Google Maps app aims
to help the users in the developing countries. This feature will allow users to
use the Google Maps service when in any area with a slow Internet connection or
no connection at all.
Not only access the map, the users can also use the voice turn by turn direction feature offline, allows the users who lost to find their way
home without internet connection.
In addition to navigation and maps, through offline support
the Google Maps users can still obtain information related to the reviews,
descriptions, full address of the local businesses that want to be visited.
Jen is ensuring that the offline support of Google Maps will
be released at the end of 2015, following YouTube offline service that has been
available previously. Google also had made a breakthrough in Indonesia in the
form of transcode method that boosts the speed of web pages loading up to four
times and 80% more efficient.
