Blackmagic Micro Cinema, an action camera with MFT lens mount

Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera

The GoPro competitors in action camera segment are now starting to emerge, one of which is Blackmagic Design which enlivens the action camera trend by launching Blackmagic Micro Cinema.

Blackmagic Micro Cinema comes with 300 gram magnesium body with dimensions of 82.5 x 69.5 x 65.4mm. With a lightweight body, the Blackmagic Micro Cinema not only can be installed on top of the helmet to record the action you are doing, it can also be attached at drones.

Although it's quite small, the quality of video recording is claimed to have equivalent quality with the professional video camera which has larger size. This camera has been equipped with 16mm super sensor which is about one-third smaller than Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera sensor. However, this sensor is larger than the sensor of action cameras in general, as used by GoPro or other.

Blackmagic Micro Cinema

With a large sensor, Blackmagic Micro Cinema is capable of recording video in RAW format with a dynamic range up to 13 stop, similar to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Additionally, this camera also supports video recording with rolling and global shutter. When recording using global shutter mode, the camera can record 1080p video at 30fps. In the rolling shutter mode, the user can record smoother result in resolution of 1080p at 60 fps, in format of 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW or Apple ProRes.

The flexibility offered by Blackmagic Micro Cinema also becomes one of the advantages. First, there are quite a lot of options for lenses. With the MFT lens mount, users can use the entire MFT camera lenses as the lenses from Olympus or Panasonic. In the battery sector, Micro Cinema is designed to be able to use the Canon LP-E6 battery that's easy to find at stores. The durability of the battery itself is promised can record video up to 90 minutes for one time charging. Furthermore, this camera is also equipped with HDMI port and DB-HD15 expansion port. Through DB-HD15 port, the users can install wireless video transmitter or control the camera setting remotely via the drone remote control. According to the plan Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera will be available in June 2015, with the price of US $ 995.
