The innovative lens manufacturer from US, Lensbaby, has just
introduced a unique product for the photography enthusiasts. Named Twist 60, it
has a mission to popularize back the special effect of Petzval lens from the
19th century.
Petzval lens is so well known for its distinctive bokeh
effect. Through Twist 60, Lensbaby tries to present the same effect, in which
the bokeh effect on the photo will make an impression as if the object is being
in the middle of a maelstrom, but at the same time still retain the sharpness
of focal point.
As the name implies, this lens has a focal length of 60mm,
ideal for photography portrait, with a maximum aperture of f/2.5. The generated
light refraction will look very beautiful thanks to the use of 12 blades
aperture therein.
This is not the first time a modern manufacturer tries to
popularize back the Petzval lens. Previously, the Lomography had ever offered
its own version through crowdfunding method. But in the case of Lomography, the
developer wanted to create a replica of Petzval lens which looked very
identical, complete with a lens body that was made of brass, so the price
offered was quite high, i.e. $ 600.
Not so for Lensbaby, the developer simply wants to deliver
the same effect with Petzval lens, in a body that's matching with the design of
DSLR or mirrorless cameras. As a result, the price is much more affordable than
the Lomography's lens.
Lensbaby Twist 60 is planned to be marketed starting on May
5 for $ 280, or $ 180 for optical component alone - with a note that you've got
the Lensbaby Optic Swap System. It comes in a variant for mount of Canon EF,
Nikon F and Sony E.
