The competition between GoPro and Sony in the action camera
realm continues to budget class. If GoPro has Hero +, Sony has recently
introduced a new rival called HDR-AS50.
Sony claims that the HDR-AS50 is very easy to operate. The easiness
is presented in the form of a neat menu with big icons that are easy to
understand. The operation buttons on the sides are also quite large; it is
apparently based on some inputs that have been received by Sony from the
consumers.
In terms of design, the HDR-AS50 looks very minimalist.
Sonny has pinned 1 megapixel Exmor R 11 sensor, with the ability to record
video in a maximum resolution of 1080p 60 fps, exactly like the GoPro Hero +.
Nevertheless, Sony also gives recording option in XAVC S format to produce
better image quality in a smaller file size.
The quality improvement is also supported by image
stabilization technology that is claimed to be three times more effective than
ever. Sony also equips HDR-AS50 with f/2.8 lens from Carl Zeiss. Uniquely, the
view angle of this lens can be adjusted between the wide and narrow, and can
perform zooming.
Furthermore, there is an optional accessory called Live-View
Remote. This accessory can be attached to the strap and worn on the wrist,
giving user access to all functions of the action camera, such as to start and
stop the recording, or to turn on and off the camera. If you don't want to use
this remote, HDR-AS50 can still be controlled from a distance using a
smartphone or tablet.
Sony HDR-AS50 is planned to be marketed starting next month
for $ 200, which includes a waterproof casing that will protect the camera up
to a depth of 60 meters. At the same time, Sony also offers the HDR-AS50R
bundle for $ 350 which includes Live-View Remote accessory.
