After reportedly been under new leadership and will be
developed in closed circumstance, now Google Glass gets a spotlight again from
the media and technology observers. This time, the project that has 'graduated'
from the Google X program is rumored to have a new name: Project Aura.
Maybe this new name will make most people confused in
distinguishing it with the Project Ara, which is a modular smartphone from
Google. In spite of that, of course, there is a reason behind the selection of
this new name.
The first reason could be Project Aura is smart glasses with
a concept that's pretty different from the Google Glass, so the team feels the
need to give a new name. Other reason is perhaps because Google wants to bury
the term of 'Glasshole', and start it from scratch without followed by this
disturbing stigma.
Although so far there has been no confirmation from Google,
but the signs about the existence of Project Aura have been predictable, in the
period from July to August, Google approached three engineers from the research
division of Amazon, Lab126, plus a former Apple engineer; all of them are
joining the Project Aura team.
Project Aura team members themselves also lists a few clues
in their LinkedIn profiles. Some write that they are working on "Google
Glass and Beyond", while one of them describes his duty as "building
cool wearables." But one thing for sure is this team is still receiving commands
from the Nest CEO, Tony Fadell.
