YouTube recently has announced a new program called YouTube Newswire, a feed program that will broadcast videos of verified witnesses in
global and regional scope.
To realize this program, YouTube has been holding a startup
called Storyful which will be in charge of verifying the news contents of
videos uploaded by YouTube users from around the world.
Newswire will display the clips that have been verified by
Storyful associated with events or major incidents, with the hope to become an
additional source for the journalists and can also be a reference to avoid the
hoax news.
In today's sophisticate era, people can easily record video
of an incident from their mobile phones. However, there is a debate that's
still going on until now, which is related to the difficulty of verifying the
information that comes from sources that don't have sufficient track record in
journalism world.
This condition makes the news companies or audiences must
filter the news they receive. So, YouTube Newswire is expected to be a reliable
source of news to ensure that it is valid and can be used as a reference.
The feedback displayed by Newswire is pinned from the
original source; the content will become witnesses that can add the value of a
story.
The cooperation between Google and Storyful has started
since 2011 when riots occurred in Tahrir Square. Not only Google, last year
they were towed by Facebook, which also launched a similar program.
