As one of the largest suppliers of digital camera sensors in
the world, certainly Sony is more superior in this field compared to other
rivals. People know that Apple iPhone from generation to generation have
packaged Sony sensors, as well as the Nikon top-class DSLR cameras.
This time Sony makes a new breakthrough in the field of
digital camera sensors. They introduce a new mirrorless camera called Sony A7R II. Included in A7 line, this new camera is also equipped with a full-frame
sensor.
But the sensor is not a mediocre full-frame sensor. Sony
claims that A7R II is the first mirrorless camera that carries full-frame
sensor with backside-illuminated (BSI) technology. The Low-light performance is
above average, accompanied with extraordinary resolution, i.e. 42.4 megapixels,
with ISO sensitivity up to 102400.
Just like its predecessor, Sony A7R II sensor is not
accompanied by a low-pass filter, so that the resulting images will look as
much detail as possible. But besides the supports of big resolution and ISO
sensitivity, A7R II also has autofocus system which 40% faster than the
original a7R thanks to 399 focal plane phase detection AF points. The continuous
shooting runs with a speed of 5 fps and in the maximum resolution.
This camera is also equipped with 5-axis image stabilization
like in Sony A7 II. About the video, Sony A7R II is ready to record 4K video at
30 fps 'purely', with XAVC S codec and bit rate of 100 Mbps. 'Purely' here
means without pixel binning process, or in other words, utilizing the entire
cross-section of full-frame sensor from end to end.
Seeing its physical appearance, not much has changed from
its predecessor, except its electronic viewfinder which is said to have the
highest magnification figure, 0,78x, with OLED panel on resolution of 2.36
million dot. Accompanying the EVF is the tilting LCD at a resolution of 1.23
million dot with a touch panel.
Wi-Fi and NFC are still maintained, complete with remote
control functions via companion app on Android or iOS. Sony A7R II also brings
PlayMemories Camera Apps support, where users can download a variety of
applications on the camera to unlock new features.
Sony A7R II will soon be available from August for $ 3,200
body only; the lens can be bought separately.
