Today the dash cam product is getting popular due to many
'intentional crashes' which were used to discredit the drivers. However at the
same time, the dash cam also serves to capture important moments during the
trip.
One thing that often becomes a problem is users have to
spend quite a lot of time to review the recording videos and then choose the
parts that they consider important. Not all people want to be bothered by the
video editing process which's quite complicated and time consuming.
If an action camera can recognize certain moments that are
considered important, the dash cam should also have similar capability. This is
what's offered by Waylens, a smart dash cam which's born from the MIT Media Lab
project.
Wayland works just like the other dash cam in general. Hang
it on a special mount on the top of the windscreen, and then it's ready to
record anything in front of your car. While recording, a series of sensors
inside this dash cam will store relevant data such as speed or even the level
of g-force during cornering.
Utilizing the existing data, the algorithm of Waylens will
make a compilation of various interesting clips that have been captured. From
there the users can use Waylens companion app on Android or iOS to perform
simple editing - for example tether real-time speed data over the video - and
share it to social networks.
Developer seems so confident with the performance of
Waylens, the developer even compare it with the GoPro Hero4. It can be
understood because Waylens brings CMOS 1/1.8 inch sensor from Sony. This sensor
has a large pixel size and high sensitivity, so that this dash cam can still
produce high quality result even it's taken in the evening or low light.
On the front side, there is f/2.4 lens with a viewing angle
of 157 degrees. The combination of sensor and lens allows Waylens to record
video in a resolution of 1080p 60 fps. While in the rear, the users will see a
high-resolution spherical screen that will display various parameters as
desired.
Wayland is powered by a rechargeable battery, but in
emergency times, the users can supply power by using the car's lighter socket.
If you are interested, Waylens can be ordered through the
Kickstarter. During the campaign, Waylens is priced at $ 299, or $ 200 cheaper
than its retail price.
