Light L16 packs 16 cameras into a single unit

We know that the development of camera technology leads to a dynamic evolution in the photography realm. Smartphone now has become an alternative of point-and-shoot camera; and although almost irreplaceable, there are quite many professionals who start to switch from the DSLR camera to mirrorless camera. And perhaps, the latest work of the Light team will have a chance to give significant traces in the photography industry.

Perhaps we've heard the cliché promises from camera producers: 'offer DSLR image quality by simple operation'. But the Light startup brings a new technology that has never been used before. The latest innovation of Light is the L16, this is the first multi-aperture computational camera in the world. It saves 16 small cameras to produce maximum resolution at 52-megapixels.

Light L16 looks not too much different from a compact camera: there is minimalist grip, and a shutter button on the right, a live preview in the back, plus a build-in flash. However, there are 16 camera modules with independent sensors in the front - as if they are placed randomly. Light can pack those camera modules thanks to the folded optics design. The sizes of lenses indicate the focal sizes, between 35-, 70- and 150-millimeter.

When used, 10 of the 16 individual cameras will snap simultaneously, taking detailed photos from different focal lengths. After that, the pictures will be knitted by internal software algorithms to create high-resolution results. The presentation of many lenses allows the configuration ala DSLR camera, including the manual control over depth of field and aperture.

We know that the camera producers always try to provide a large sensor size. In addition to produce quality results, a high figure will also facilitate the marketing process. But instead of applying a single sensor with a high price, Light prefers to utilize a combination of smartphone class lenses. The feature of Light L16 can compete with the features of mobile devices; it saves the on-board editing capability and Wi-Fi connection.

The zoom is done optically, and bokeh effects can be easily achieved through maximum aperture at f/1.2. Light L16 remains reliable to take pictures in the dim situations. Light hasn't published the complete specification of L16 because currently this camera is still in the prototype's test phase. L16 is also claimed to be dust and water resistant, and is packaged with 128GB internal storage.

Light L16 will be launched at the end of summer 2016 in the American market. The retail version is priced at US $ 1,700, but those who order it now will get discount of US $ 400.
