In the mining and construction industry, Caterpillar has
been recognized as a leading brand. It gets a reputation in the provision of
trucks, bulldozers and even shredder machine. On the mainstream segment, Cat is
selling consumer goods such as clock and apparel. But maybe not many people
know that this company also produces a smartphone.
Actually, Caterpillar had been playing in the
telecommunication device field for long enough, but the smartphone category was
following when Cat B15 was introduced. And recently, Caterpillar introduces Cat S40, the hottest variant in the smartphone line. Of course the basic concept of
Cat S40 is still based on special factors that have become the characteristic
of Caterpillar: toughness and high durability.
Talking about appearance, this smartphone still brings the
similar design approach just like the previous variants, although Cat S40
doesn't look too bulky anymore. It has a dimension of 144.9 × 74.1 × 12.5 mm,
weighing 185 grams, presenting a 4.7-inch IPS screen (540 × 960), and is
protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 layer. On the official website, Caterpillar
doesn't mention in detail about the composition of the external materials, but
this smartphone seems to combine metal and rubber materials.
Cat S40 gets IP68 certification so that it is waterproof for
one hour, anti-dust, and can operate in temperatures of -25 to 55 degrees
Celsius. Additionally, Cat S40 is equipped with Military Standard 810G
certificate which means that this smartphone is resistant to impact and still
works normally even if dropped from a height of 1.8 meters. Through glove-on
technology, the user doesn't have to take off his/her gloves when operating the
device. The screen can still read the touch even though the fingers are wet.
Cat S40 is claimed to be able to present a super-bright
display and quality audio output. With 3000mAh Lithium Ion battery, Cat S40
offers a talk-time for 18 hours and standby time up to 39 days. This smartphone
is also supported by the 4G connection, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, micro USB, NFC,
and GPS.
If seen from the internal specification, Cat S40 is still between
the entry-level and mid level. This smartphone brings Qualcomm MSM8909
Quad-core 1.1Ghz, with 1GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, and runs on Android 5.1
Lollipop. In addition, there is 8-megapixel main camera and also 2-megapixel
front camera. Cat S40 is offered at a price of £ 400 or around US $ 620.
