Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) from LG will make the laptops become thinner and lighter

Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) from LG

In recent years, we have seen how the laptop manufacturers are competing to launch super thin products. Every millimeter and every gram are calculated carefully to present super thin and portable laptops.

In addition to the components such as the battery and the mainboard, the laptop screen also gives significant effect to the portability aspect of a laptop. And the good news is soon we will be able to find laptops that are thinner and lighter than the laptops that have ever existed before thanks to the screen innovations from LG Display.

This technology is called Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT), and the stage of mass production seems to begin in the middle of this year. This technology enables LG Display team to tether the capacitive touch sensor directly on the LCD panel, without having to add another layer.

As we know, laptop screens are usually composed of several layers in addition of glass, such as touch panel and LCD panel. Well, with this new technology, the formation of a laptop screen will be turned into glass layer and LCD panel only; the touch panel is no longer needed because the capacitive sensor has been embedded in the LCD panel.

This technology is actually not a brand new technology, LG has applied it first on LG G4 smartphone, but this is the first time the similar technology is applied to the device with a large screen.

Then how significant is the role of Advanced In-Cell Touch technology in helping to improve the portability of laptop? Based on the LG explanation, the thickness of the overall display panel can be reduced by 1 millimeter, while the weight could be cut about 200 grams. Another benefit is the image will look brighter and clearer, as well as better touch response.

LG Display currently has signed cooperation with various vendors to supply the AIT panel measuring 15.6 inch and 14 inch. Most likely the laptops that have been equipped with AIT will be launched soon in the next few months, in conjunction with the launching of Windows 10.
